Oscar Derby 2017 Special: The BAFTAs

Yes, L* L* L*nd wins more. I react appropriately.

Last night was the 70th annual British Academy Film Awards. Though overlap between the BAFTAs and the Academy Awards is nothing, “momentum” is an invaluable concept in the Oscar Derby. And yes, it is indeed Privileged Nostalgia: The Superficial Song-and-Dance-ish Movie that continues capturing hearts… for some reason.

Here’s the list of nominees and winners (with only occasional lazy comment):

OUTSTANDING BRITISH FILM

American Honey
Denial
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
I, Daniel Blake
Notes on Blindness
Under the Shadow

Literally have not seen a single one of the nominees this year. So no comment.

OUTSTANDING FILM

Arrival
I, Daniel Blake
La La Land
Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight

OUTSTANDING DIRECTOR

Denis Villeneuve (Arrival)
Ken Loach (I, Daniel Blake)
Damien Chazelle (La La Land)
Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea)
Tom Ford (Nocturnal Animals)

OUTSTANDING LEADING ACTOR

Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge)
Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea)
Ryan Gosling (La La Land)
Jake Gyllenhaal (Nocturnal Animals)
Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic)

Aww… with no Denzel, Casey Affleck manages one more (though I suspect he still has a challenge for Oscar night itself.)

Sidenote: What is the deal with the (now) hilariously random Nocturnal Animals male actor nominations this season?? Aaron Taylor Johnson nominated and wins the Golden Globe… Michael Shannon nominated Oscar… (though both in Supporting Actor) and Gyllenhaal nominated here. I’m amused by this point.

OUTSTANDING LEADING ACTRESS

Amy Adams (Arrival)
Emily Blunt (The Girl on the Train)
Natalie Portman (Jackie)
Emma Stone (La La Land)
Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins)

Yawn.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR

Aaron Taylor Johnson (Nocturnal Animals)
Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water)
Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
Dev Patel (Lion)
Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins)

TWIST!

Sidenote again: Guess the British were way more fond of Tom Ford and Nocturnal Animals in general…

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Viola Davis (Fences)
Naomie Harris (Moonlight)
Nicole Kidman (Lion)
Hayley Squires (I, Daniel Blake)
Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea)

You can’t watch Viola Davis in Fences and NOT give it to her!

OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

Taylor Sheridan (Hell or High Water)
Paul Laverty (I, Daniel Blake)
Damien Chazelle (La La Land)
Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea)
Barry Jenkins (Moonlight)

Huh. Ok. That works.

OUTSTANDING ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Eric Heisserer (Arrival)
Robert Schenkkan & Andrew Knight (Hacksaw Ridge)
Allison Schroeder & Theodore Melfi (Hidden Figures)
Luke Davies (Lion)
Tom Ford (Nocturnal Animals)

That’s now 4 nominations for Nocturnal Animals here…

OUTSTANDING CINEMATOGRAPHY

Bradford Young (Arrival)
Linus Sandgren (La La Land)
Greig Fraser (Lion)
Giles Nuttgens (Hell or High Water)
Seamus McGarvey (Nocturnal Animals)

  1. Fun seeing Giles Nuttgens in here.
  2. That is now 5 nominations for Nocturnal Animals

OUTSTANDING FILM EDITING

Joe Walker (Arrival)
John Gilbert (Hacksaw Ridge)
Tom Cross (La La Land)
Jennifer Lame (Manchester by the Sea)
Joan Sobel (Nocturnal Animals)

SIX NOMINATIONS! Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals has only one Oscar nomination (for Michael Shannon), and yet here… six so far! Sorry, everyone, but this has now become fascinating / mildly thrilling for me only in the way that such things can be for someone writing “Oscar Derby” posts early in the morning.

OUTSTANDING VISUAL EFFECTS

Arrival
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Doctor Strange
Jungle Book
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Huh. I like this category here better than at the Oscars…

OUTSTANDING PRODUCTION DESIGN

John Bush & Charles Wood (Doctor Strange)
Stuart Craig & James Hambidge (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them)
Jess Gonchor & Nancy Haigh (Hail, Caesar!)
David Wasco & Sandy Reynolds-Wasco (La La Land)
Shane Valentino & Meg Everist (Nocturnal Animals)

Not surprised.

SEVEN!

OUTSTANDING COSTUME DESIGN

Joanna Johnston (Allied)
Colleen Atwood (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them)
 Consolata Boyle (Florence Foster Jenkins)
 Madeline Fontaine (Jackie)
Mary Gophers (La La Land)

This is actually the exact same at the Oscars.

OUTSTANDING MAKEUP & HAIRSTYLING

Doctor Strange
Hacksaw Ridge
 Florence Foster Jenkins
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Nocturnal Animals

Not at all like the Oscars.

EIGHT!!

OUTSTANDING MUSIC

Mica Levi (Jackie)
Justin Hurwitz (La La Land)
Dustin O’Halloran and Hauschka (Lion)
Jóhann Jóhannsson (Arrival)

Abel Korzeniowski (Nocturnal Animals)

  1. Jóhann Jóhannsson was ineligible for his Arrival soundtrack at the Oscars.
  2. NINE NOCTURNAL ANIMALS NOMINATIONS.

OUTSTANDING SOUND DESIGN

Arrival
Deepwater Horizon
Hacksaw Ridge
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
La La Land

OUTSTANDING FILM NOT IN THE ENLISH LANGUAGE

Julieta

Son of Saul

Toni Erdmann

A few of these were from last year for the United States / Academy Awards (specifically Son of Saul.)

 OUTSTANDING ANIMATED FILM

Finding Dory
Kubo and the Two Strings
Moana
Zootropolis

Having a hard time being too grumpy about Kubo winning SOLELY because I’m so amused that the UK title for Zootopia is apparently Zootropolis…

OUTSTANDING DOCUMENTARY FILM

13th (Ava DuVernay)
The Beatles: Eight Days A Week – The Touring Years
(Ron Howard)
The Eagle Huntress
(Otto Bell & Stacey Reiss)
Notes on Blindness
